Maths and Movement Part 1

This term our class is focusing on learning our addition, subtraction and multiplication facts in fun and engaging ways.

We are all at different stages with our knowledge and to help each other we are making dances to some cool songs we found online.

First our teachers helped us to select some facts and songs to sing.

We choose this song about bonds to 10 and this song about doubles.

Then we worked in 3s and 4s to come up with some cool moves to help us stay fit and learn our maths facts.

We hope you like our dance moves and would love a comment in you try it out in your class.

Learning to read a grid

Yesterday and today we learned about reading grid coordinates with the wonderful work created by our student teachers.

In the activity we had to fill in the table and to show the positions of our Pokemon on the grid.
We loved the activity, we specially liked that it used our art.

Here is a video of us working hard at our maths.

We didn't get time to write our stories about the Pokemon on the grid and their positions but will be doing that early next term. We hope our student teacher might come and visit so they could help us and maybe even play a game of battle ship if they are not too busy.

Preposition Videos

On Tuesday we had an amazing time making movies using the preposition we have been learning from our wonderful student teachers.

We started out by watching the example which can be found on this site:

After watch the example all the children were excited to get going. They were given the option of making their video as an Explain Everything using photos and voice recordings (Which they do a lot) or making it using multiple short clips into a movie in iMovie.

Everyone loved making these movies. A group stayed in class with Mrs Carruthers while another group went outside with Mr Vogt. It was cool to see so many different creations.

Here are two examples:

I like This maths because it was so much fun.

Prepositional language

Today was the first day using the site created for us by our University of Auckland student teachers. This site focuses on position and orientation, today we looked at prepositions.

If you click the image below you will see the wonderful site they made:

We had so much fun using these awesome activities. Today we watched the introduction videos, played awesome Kahoot and did the first prepositions activity.

Here is what the kids had to say:

Our first thoughts on the site:

What a great time we had doing maths. We enjoyed the activities so much fun moving the objects around.

Fire me out posters

Last week we made posters about ourselves and our blogs for maths. We used the data from our blogs to create questions and answer them. We then wrote maths problem so that others could figure out the answer.

Eve

This is the poster I made using maths problems to figure me out.

Planning our figure me out posters

Last week we made figure me out poster. Before we made our actual poster we had to make a plan and solve the problems ourselves.

We had to look closely at our blogs to find the answers to the question. Then we had to use addition, subtraction and multiplication ti write problems for others to solve.

This is Aliana's plan.
Figure me out!

Shape hunt

Last week the children in the block went on the shape hunt. They had to look around their house to see what shapes they could find. Here are three examples of what they found.

Jaxson
My shapes that I collect from my own house.

Cayden
Today I went on a walk. I hunted for shapes.

Shyla

Maths Videos

Here are some videos of two amazing room 21 children sharing their maths thinking.

Eve
Here I am showing you how I learnt one of the timetables and how I got the answer using cards to make my groups.

Cayden
Today I did some math and it was easy. So I did my own equation. I made a moving and showed how I solved it by putting it into bits. So first I added the tens then I added the ones. Hope you enjoy.

Statistics

As we start the year in the block we are focusing on Statistics. We are looking at data about everything from the fruits we like to the different colours of M&Ms in a small packet.

Here are some of the thing we have learnt so far.

Samson
I asked people what is your favourite fruit and made tally chart and bar graph.

Oi’Oi
We did statistics with M&Ms.

Families of Facts

In maths we have been learning our bonds to ten. We know that these are important for solving lots of problems.

This is Shyla's families of facts.
Today we did families of facts it was fun. We had to make ten.

Fun with Statistics

Today was another wonderful day in rooms 19 and 20. We leapt into our maths learning. We started by learning, practicing and sharing our basic facts knowledge.
After some wonderful basic facts including our bonds to 5, bonds to 10 and 2 times tables. We follow this great maths with some statistics. Each child in the class got a small bag of M&Ms and had to sort, count, create a tally chart and graph the results of their small investigation.

Here is Chevylee's results of her investigation.

We found out about the colours in a packet of m&ms

Animal Fractions Israel

Last week Room 14 learnt about fractions. The Pyramids group learnt to find a whole from given fractions and identify what fraction of the animals were 1 paddock or 2 paddocks.

This is my animal fractions for this week hope you like it.

Place Value

Last week all of Room 14 have been learning about place value. They have learnt how to expand and contract numbers and how to add numbers using hundreds, tens and ones.

This is Israel's wonderful maths. Well done Israel.

This week we are learning about place value and adding hundreds, Tens and Ones.

The Great Maths Challenges

Last week on Friday Miss Davis challenged room 14 in work in small groups to solve a whole range of maths problems. They had talk about what they were doing to help each member of their group build their mathematical knowledge.

We had some questions about place value.

Some questions about addition.

Even some about fractions.

Room 14 had a lot of fun and have asked to have a maths challenge again this week. We can't wait to share even more maths fun with you as the year goes on.

Fun with Statistics

On Friday room 14 took part in a statistical investigation to find out what colours are most and least common in a small bag of M&Ms. Each member of the class had a small bag of M&Ms which they opened counted and displayed the colours in the packet as a bar graph.

We found out which colour was least common in your packet.

We found out which colour was most common in our packet.

We enjoyed working out the difference between the colours.

We learnt that no all our packets had the same colours.

Zaeeda @ Pt England School: Intergalactic Space Trip

Zaeeda has explained her Mathematical thinking beautifully in this post. This is a great example of how to add and subtract decimals.

Maths Problem Solving

A woman has two dogs, three rabbits and lettuce. She must cross a river. Her boat is unable to transport all in one crossing. If she transported the dogs, the rabbits would eat the lettuce. If she transported the lettuce, the dogs would eat the rabbits.

Question: How is she able to transport them all safely?
